About
Medialab Terata is a space for audiovisual experimentation and production located in Calafou, a former industrial colony in the Anoia region, very close to Barcelona. It was born as a living, mutant laboratory that combines analogue technologies with free software, championing the reappropriation of tools and knowledge as a form of resistance, memory and collective creation. Outside conventional production circuits, Terata operates as a self-managed, collaborative space, open to artists, hackers, educators, documentary makers, activists and collectives who want to explore the possibilities of audiovisual work from a critical, feminist and technopolitical perspective. Its lines of action are:
- The recovery and use of analogue formats.
- The practice and dissemination of free software for editing, streaming and post-production.
- Horizontal training and technical support for community projects.
- Research into autonomous communication and archiving infrastructures.
Wiki
The medialab wiki is an open, collaborative platform where projects, resources and experiences linked to the lab are documented. It serves as a repository of practical knowledge about the activities and processes around:
- Recovery and use of analogue formats.
- Practice and dissemination of free software for editing, streaming and post-production.
- Horizontal training and technical support for artistic and community projects.
- Research into autonomous communication and archiving infrastructures.
The main goal of this documentation effort is to foster the replicability of methods, tools and projects.
Residencies
We host artists, researchers, activists and creators who want to develop projects linked to technological sovereignty, futurotopias, digital disobedience or citizen science. Residencies are not just spaces for production, but moments of vital exchange with the Calafou community: participation in assemblies, collaboration in everyday tasks and critical dialogue with other eco-industrial projects, bio-builders or feminist technology collectives.
All residencies must respect Calafou's Research Protocol, which requires an internal mentor, a free licence for the results and a public presentation to the community.
teratOS
teratOS is the medialab's GNU/Linux operating system, based on Debian 13. A system oriented towards audiovisual experimentation. Designed and maintained so that anyone can work with analogue video, glitch and VJing without relying on proprietary software. It comes from the same logic as everything else we do at Terata: reclaiming our tools instead of depending on them.
teratOS comes with the tools we use already installed and configured: datamoshing, video mapping, audioreactive effects, video compression, editing with free software, plus its own visual identity.
teratOS is designed as pendrive computing: you can boot it and work directly from a USB stick, without installing it on the computer's hard drive or touching the system already on it. An audiovisual workstation always on your keychain. You can also install it on your computer.
Do you run video workshops? Try it with your students.
Code
We run our own Gitea instance because we don't want our community to depend on GitHub, owned by Microsoft, a company historically opposed to the values of free software and to life itself.
Our goal is to:
- Decentralise and strengthen access to code.
- Guarantee the availability of free software for audiovisual creation, independent of the corporate decisions of a centralised platform.
- Make software easier to access by acting as a bridge between users and GitHub, so you don't have to visit the GitHub website or accept its terms of use.
